White Rim 7:59

Quick update as I start working through the vacation pictures thus far. Vacation started after work Friday with a hurried trip to the rim before moving on to Zion. Pedalling just before 6am, SS (2:1 gearing) and counterclockwise with Shafer then the paved road last. Happy with the time for sure considering the wind and had a lot of fun racing back to find Marni waiting with sandwiches. Yum!

Sub 8 hour! way to go. do you know what your moving time was? i guess being by yourself you probably didn't stop for much of anything.

I stopped to put away clothes after the climbing started and the sun came up, a few nature breaks, get my picture taken by some campers on the Hogback, futz with my front tire that I had to seal on Thursday and a few other random things like paying on the way out. Mostly I kept moving. I don't know actual stopped time until I download the GPS track since when I finished I put the bike down to eat without turning the GPS off. I'm sure it's under 30 minutes total stoppage time though.

Questions. Which direction and did you flash Murphy's and Shaeffer or Horse Thief?

I went counterclockwise (the "slow" way IMO) and I didn't flash any of the climbs. I walked a little on all of them but I'm sure you could muscle up them with that gearing if you were really determined to.

duh! I just re-read your post and you mentioned counterclockwise. Nice ride, you've set the bar, thrown down the gauntlet. I gotta go try it now.

Go the other direction or start at the bottom of Shafer for easy ways to go faster IMO.

I don't know how long it will take me to get there but I am trying to throw down a sub 7 hour SS going clockwise someday. I believe that's within reach for sure.

Sub 7 on a single - that'd be a ripper of a ride for sure. Maybe...you'd have to gear for the flats and run the climbs, and have tailwinds. And no sand. The day after rimride we did a CW lap and had 30+ mph headwinds for much of the ride. Not a chance of 7 that day ;)

You think you could muscle up murphy's and hardscrabble with 2:1 gearing? I tried...but I guess I'm no muscle. My power meter was pinging some lofty numbers as I was passing out...

Yea sub 7 would take some good conditions and a well chosen start location but after this ride I think it's doable. Personally I don't care about walking a section here or there so I'd definitely gear for the flats. 2:1 on the flats might be too easy though, you might have to go bigger.

I think someone could muscle up murphy's and hardscrabble on a 2:1 if that was a goal but I doubt I'd give it much of a try myself. For one I don't like taking a stem to the nuts on those loose climbs when you're almost passed out :)
